Tagline
Steve McQueen As 'Bullitt' The word 'cop' isn't written all over him - something more puzzling is. There are bad cops and there are good cops - and then there's Bullitt. "BULLITT comes to this theatre soon. That ought to shake up the place pretty good. Not many freaky cops like BULLITT around. You look at the Italian shoes and the turtleneck and you have to wonder. You listen to the official beefs about 'personal misconduct', 'disruptive influence', you figure he's got to be up for trade. But when some rare Chicago blood starts spilling in San Francisco, they give BULLITT the mop. They weren't exactly doing him a favour. But they've done a great big one for you" Detective Lt. Frank Bullitt - some other kind of cop. Pity the guy he works for.

Quotes of Bullitt

Bullitt: Look, you work your side of the street, and I'll work mine.

Walter Chalmers: Come on, now. Don't be naive, Lieutenant. We both know how careers are made. Integrity is something you sell the public.

Walter Chalmers: Frank, we must all compromise.
Bullitt: Bullshit.

Bullitt: You sell whatever you want, but don't sell it here tonight.

Captain Bennett: He let the killers in himself? Why would he do a thing like that?
Frank Bullitt: I'm waiting to ask him.
Captain Bennett: What about the setup? What do you make of that?
Frank Bullitt: Shotgun and a backup man, professionals.

Walter Chalmers: I do not choose to have people accuse me of false promises for the sake of cheap sensationalism, or to be compromised by your lieutenant.

Captain Bennett: Albert Edward Rennick, used car salesman, Chicago.
Walter Chalmers: Who's Rennick?
Frank Bullitt: He was the man who was shot at the Hotel Daniels. You sent us to guard the wrong man, Mr. Chalmers.

Pete Ross: This is Pete. We lost him.
telephone voice: He's your brother, Ross. If you can't find him, we have people who can. And YOU'RE paying for the contract.

Bullitt: Look, Chalmers, let's understand each other... I Full Quotes >>

Trivia of Bullitt

- Two Mustangs and two Dodge Chargers were used for the famous chase scene. Both Mustangs were owned by the Ford Motor Company and part of a promotional loan agreement with Warner Brothers. The cars were modified for the high-speed chase by veteran auto racer 'Max Balchowsky' (qv). Stunt coordinator 'Carey Loftin' (qv) got 'Bud Ekins' (qv) to drive the Mustang for the bulk of the stunts. Both of the Dodges were junked after the filming, as was one of the Mustangs. The other less banged-up Mustang was purchased by a WB employee after all production and post-production was completed. The car ended up in New Jersey a few years later, where 'Steve McQueen (I)' (qv) attempted to buy it. The owner refused to sell, and the car now sits in a barn and has not been driven in many years.

- 'Bud Ekins' (qv) who drives the Mustang also did the motorcycle jump for 'Steve McQueen (I)' (qv) in _The Great Escape (1963)_ (qv).

- The chase sequence takes place over a number of non-contiguous streets in and south of San Francisco. The sequence apparently starts under Highway 101 in the Mission District. When the Charger does a U-turn on what is Precita Avenue to follow the Mustang, a storage tank Full Trivia >>
